Twitter Will No Longer Let You Block People

Under Elon Musk's guidance, Twitter, now rebranded as X, continues its downward spiral, making controversial decisions such as the removal of features he doesn't personally support. One of his recent proposals involves eliminating the ability to block users on the platform, except for direct messages (DMs). Musk's argument against blocking is that muting users is more logical, a stance he had previously expressed. The mute option will remain intact according to his plan. Critics were swift to point out Musk's prior use of the block feature, which has served as a defense against harassment and a crucial safety measure for users. Its removal could potentially expose users to more objectionable content that they'd rather not see in their feeds and notifications. Moreover, CNBC highlighted that some users rely on blocking to filter out unwanted advertisers and brands, potentially impacting X's financial performance. Earlier this year, X discontinued its free API, causing disruptions for many third-party applications. Just a year before, when the platform was still recognized as Twitter, it endorsed third-party apps as a means for users to combat harassment. One of these solutions, Block Party, severed ties with X due to the API changes. Musk also announced his intention to enforce Dark Mode on all users, citing its superiority, but this decision was met with strong opposition and was eventually abandoned.
